Athlete Spotlight: Megan Buschkopf

2017 has been a complicated year for my family.....
 

On top of the usual chaos of being a working mom, my husband is struggling with medical complications from a lifetime of juvenile diabetes and my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. If ever there was a time it would be easy for training to slip quietly to the side, it would be now. Everyone would understand. No one would blame me for taking a break or saying that I just don’t have time right now—no one but myself. I’ve always been a driven, goal-oriented person. I love training and inching closer and closer to where I want to be. This year, however, training has become something different. It has become the time I get to spend intensely focused on something positive. 

 

 

 

Because of my schedule, training usually happens at 3:30 in the morning. Although it sounds crazy, it has become my favorite part of the day. At 3:30, life is quiet and moves more slowly. There is time and space to think. It’s my time; a time when I can struggle with things I understand—things that are tangible and finite: weight on a bar, moving with the right rhythm and timing, making a lift or not. There’s something soothing about returning each day to the movements you love the best, waiting for you there like old friends. And after I battle the barbell, I’m strong enough to go back out into the world and do battle with the things I don’t understand: disease and loss and helplessness. 

 

 

 

In terms of how to balance training and life, I don’t have any magical answers or life changing tips. The simplest things are often the hardest: get up—earlier than you would like. Get to the gym—even if you’re tired. Put your best effort forward—even when you don’t want to. Repeat this every day because training makes you a better parent, a better partner, a better human. Do it because working through frustration and failure makes you more empathetic. Do it because getting uncomfortable teaches you that you can do impossible things. Do it because it gives you joy. Do it because out of the 1,440 minutes in a day, some of them have to be spent making you the strongest, kindest, and best version of yourself.
